My Country Song

PoemBy Catherine Sykes

My Country Song

It must contain betrayal, and a love that never dies
Along with lots of alcohol
And tears that never dry

There has to be a truck in there, some yellow roses, too.
Old fragrances of Aquanet from 1962

From polyester to Taboo
And hair teased oh so high
I surely miss those heartfelt words
Of a country lullaby

Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette, too.
I’d give a lot to hear again
Their tales of derring do

I sang along with George Jones when they put a wreath upon a door
And I wondered with his friends if she’d come back once more.

Country music has the power
To make a soul believe
That love can last forever
Perhaps a bit naive.
